Content Copywriter job description
Summary/Objective:
The Content Copywriter is a versatile and creatively driven writer within the agency's Creative Department — responsible for developing compelling, brand-consistent copy across a wide range of formats, channels, and client categories. This is not a production writing role. The Content Copywriter is expected to bring genuine creative thinking, a sharp editorial instinct, and the ability to write with purpose — connecting a brand's voice to its audience in ways that are both artistically resonant and commercially effective.
At the mid-to-senior level, this role goes beyond executing briefs. The Content Copywriter is expected to contribute to the ideation process, elevate the creative quality of campaigns, and serve as the copy authority for assigned client accounts — owning the brand voice, guiding tone, and ensuring every word earns its place. They work in close partnership with Art Direction, Strategy, Social Content, and Brand Managers to produce integrated work that holds together across platforms and touchpoints.
The ideal candidate writes with range — equally capable of crafting a punchy social caption, a long-form brand manifesto, a 30-second TV script, or a multi-platform campaign concept — and brings the maturity to defend their creative choices with clarity and confidence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Copywriting & content creation
- Write original copy across all formats and channels — social media, digital advertising, video scripts, radio, OOH, print, email, web, branded content, and campaign concepts.
- Develop and refine brand voice, tone guidelines, and messaging frameworks for assigned client accounts.
- Translate creative briefs into copy that is on-strategy, on-brand, and creatively differentiated.
- Write and iterate quickly under deadline pressure, producing multiple copy directions when required.
- Adapt copy fluidly across platforms — understanding that what works on TikTok is different from what works in a TV spot or a brand manifesto.
Creative development & ideation
- Participate actively in creative concepting sessions, brainstorms, and campaign development — contributing ideas beyond copy alone.
- Develop integrated campaign concepts in partnership with Art Direction, bringing both the verbal and conceptual dimension of ideas to the table.
- Contribute to the development of campaign territories, messaging hierarchies, and brand positioning statements.
- Bring proactive creative thinking to client accounts — pitching ideas unprompted when cultural or strategic opportunities arise.
Brand voice & quality ownership
- Serve as the copy authority for assigned accounts — owning brand voice consistency across all written touchpoints.
- Review and provide feedback on copy produced by junior writers, social content creators, and community managers to ensure quality and voice alignment.
- Maintain and update brand voice guides, tone documents, and messaging frameworks per client account.
- Ensure all copy aligns with client brand guidelines, legal requirements, and platform best practices before delivery.
Collaboration & client engagement
- Work closely with Brand Managers to understand client objectives, campaign briefs, and audience insights — and translate them into copy that performs.
- Present and defend copy concepts and rationale in client and internal meetings with confidence and creative conviction.
- Collaborate with Design, Art Direction, Video, and Social Content teams to ensure copy and visual elements are conceptually unified.
- Contribute to new business pitches and proposals by developing copy concepts, campaign territories, and brand language for prospective clients.
- Stay current on cultural trends, language shifts, platform content norms, and competitor brand communications — bringing relevant observations into the creative process.
- Support the integration of AI writing tools into the copy workflow where appropriate, while maintaining the creative judgment and editorial standards that define the agency's output.
Day-to-day copy production
- Write, revise, and deliver copy for active campaigns across assigned client accounts — meeting briefs, deadlines, and quality standards consistently.
- Manage multiple copy assignments simultaneously across different brands, formats, and channels without sacrificing creative quality.
- Review and self-edit all work before submission — submitting copy that is clean, considered, and ready for client review.
Creative collaboration
- Attend and contribute to creative kickoffs, brainstorming sessions, and campaign development meetings.
- Partner with Art Directors on concept development — working as a creative team, not just providing words for a visual.
- Provide copy direction and feedback to junior writers and social content team members as needed.
Client & stakeholder communication
- Present copy concepts and creative rationale clearly in client-facing and internal meetings.
- Incorporate client and internal feedback constructively while maintaining creative integrity and brand voice consistency.
- Communicate proactively with Brand Managers on copy status, creative directions, and any scope or brief changes.
Brand stewardship
- Maintain up-to-date brand voice documentation for each assigned account.
- Apply consistent editorial standards across all copy produced — regardless of format, channel, or campaign scale.
- Flag copy or messaging concerns that risk brand inconsistency or strategic misalignment before work goes to client.
Other Duties:
Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The Content Copywriter does not carry formal direct reports at the mid level. At the senior level, this role may provide copy direction, feedback, and informal mentorship to junior copywriters, social content creators, and community managers — acting as a copy quality reference point within the Creative Department. The role contributes to the creative standards of the team through example, collaboration, and editorial guidance rather than hierarchical management.
Job Competencies:
Writing range
Can move fluidly between formats — social caption to brand manifesto to TV script — adapting voice, register, and tone without losing creative quality in any of them.
Creative ideation
Contributes ideas beyond the brief — brings conceptual thinking, not just executional craft, to campaigns and client accounts.
Brand voice intelligence
Understands what makes each brand's voice distinct, can articulate it clearly, and protects it consistently across every touchpoint and team member.
Strategic grounding
Writes from strategy — understands audience insights, brand positioning, and campaign objectives well enough to produce copy that earns its place commercially, not just creatively.
Collaborative creativity
Thrives working alongside Art Directors, Strategists, Social Creators, and Brand Managers — sees great work as a team outcome, not an individual one.
Editorial discipline
Edits ruthlessly — knows when to cut, when to simplify, and when a word is earning its place or just taking up space.
Preferred Education and Related Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Advertising, Journalism, Creative Writing, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
- 3–6 years of professional copywriting experience in an advertising agency, creative studio, or brand-side marketing team — with a portfolio demonstrating range across formats, industries, and campaign types.
- Demonstrated experience writing across multiple channels: social media, digital advertising, video/audio scripts, email, OOH, print, and web.
- Experience developing brand voice guides, messaging frameworks, or copy platforms for client accounts.
- Background in integrated campaign concepting — not just copy execution, but contributing to the ideas themselves.
- Experience presenting creative work to clients or internal stakeholders and defending copy decisions with strategic rationale.
- Bilingual English/Spanish copywriting fluency is strongly preferred for the Puerto Rico market.
Knowledge and Critical Skills Required:
Copywriting & creative skills
- Expert command of written English and Spanish — grammar, syntax, rhythm, and tone across formal and colloquial registers.
- Strong short-form copy skills: headlines, social captions, taglines, CTAs, OOH, and display advertising.
- Long-form writing capability: brand manifestos, scripts, branded content, articles, and campaign narratives.
- Platform-native copy awareness — understanding how copy functions differently on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, email, and broadcast.
- Scriptwriting for video, radio, and audio formats — including structure, pacing, and on-screen/on-air copy conventions.
- Experience using AI writing tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Jasper, or similar) as a creative aid — with the editorial judgment to know when they help and when they don't.
Strategic & brand knowledge
- Ability to interpret creative briefs and translate strategy, insights, and brand positioning into compelling copy.
- Experience developing and maintaining brand voice guidelines and tone-of-voice documentation.
- Working knowledge of SEO copywriting principles and how they apply to web and content strategy.
- Familiarity with the integrated creative production process — enough to work fluently with Design, Video, Social, and Brand teams.
- Awareness of cultural and linguistic nuances relevant to the Puerto Rico market and bilingual audiences..
- Experience writing for regulated industries (finance, pharma, insurance) with an understanding of compliance review processes.
- Contribution to new business pitches and agency growth proposals.
Physical Demands & Travel:
- Primarily office and desk-based; requires sustained use of computers, screens, and digital collaboration tools.
- Occasional attendance at content production shoots, client presentations, and brand activations may be required.
- Travel of approximately 5–10% for client visits, campaign shoots, and agency or industry events.
- All physical requirements are subject to reasonable accommodation as needed.
Work Environment:
- Standard Monday–Friday schedule; campaign deadlines and client needs may occasionally require flexibility outside core hours.
- Collaborative, studio-style agency environment where creative debate, editorial rigor, and brand curiosity are expected and valued.
- Regular participation in creative reviews, copy critiques, team brainstorms, and agency-wide initiatives.
- Must be comfortable managing multiple copy assignments, client voices, and creative tracks simultaneously — without losing quality, consistency, or creative ambition on any of them.
