What does a Instructional Designer do?
An Instructional Designer plans, develops, and refines learning content across formats such as e-learning modules, instructor-led training, job aids, and blended curricula. They work closely with subject matter experts to translate complex information into clear, learner-centered experiences, applying established instructional design models (such as ADDIE or SAM) to ensure content meets defined learning objectives. Day-to-day work involves writing scripts and storyboards, building interactive course content in authoring tools, conducting needs analyses, and iterating on designs based on learner feedback and performance data.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct needs analyses to identify learning gaps and define measurable objectives
- Design and develop e-learning modules, storyboards, and scripts using authoring tools
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to gather, verify, and structure content
- Apply instructional design frameworks (e.g., ADDIE, SAM) to guide project workflow
- Build assessments and knowledge checks aligned to learning outcomes
- Revise content based on stakeholder feedback, pilot results, and learner performance data
