Home and Design Reporter job description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The Real Estate section of the New York Times is looking for an experienced, ambitious and creative reporter to focus on interior design and home coverage. The beat will include covering design trends, renovations, celebrity home tours and service around the home. Our ideal candidate is well versed in visual formats, including video. You should be conversant in the world of design but able to write to the everyday New York Times reader who is not a design or architecture enthusiast.

While much of the work will involve service coverage and home tours, this reporter should be prepared to jump on breaking news and come with ideas for enterprise stories and projects in the world of renovation and design that require real reporting skills and experience. You will constantly develop sources within the industry and deliver regular scoops.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City or Los Angeles and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

You will report to the Real Estate editor.

Responsibilities:

  • Report, write and publish multiple stories a week (a mix of news, service, and features).
  • Cover design trends, create service guides, profile notable houses.
  • Oversee our celebrity-focused home tours and spinoff franchises.
  • Cultivate sources and regularly deliver scoops.
  • Develop stories that include a range of voices and perspectives.
  • Collaborate with visual editors on new story formats and multimedia, including reporter video.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years' experience as a reporter
  • Strong news judgment and instincts
  • Experience in a deadline-driven environment
  • Creativity and willingness to experiment with new story forms, including video

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of — and sources within — the design industry
  • Experience interviewing and booking celebrity interviews
  • Positive, collaborative attitude

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

Additional Compensation and Benefits:

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
