What does a VFX Artist do?
A VFX Artist designs and produces visual effects shots by combining live-action footage, CGI elements, matte paintings, and simulations into a cohesive final image. Day-to-day work involves compositing multi-pass renders in tools like Nuke or After Effects, colour-matching CG elements to plate photography, rotoscoping, and collaborating with directors, supervisors, and other departments to hit technical and creative briefs on schedule. In games contexts, the role shifts toward real-time particle systems, shaders, and in-engine effects using tools such as Unreal or Unity.
Key responsibilities
- Composite CG elements, live-action plates, and matte paintings into finished shots
- Match colour, grain, and lighting between CGI and photography for photorealistic integration
- Rotoscope and create mattes to isolate foreground and background elements
- Build and refine particle, fluid, and destruction simulations
- Troubleshoot technical pipeline issues and maintain clean, organised node graphs or project files
- Collaborate with VFX supervisors, lighters, and 3D artists to meet shot briefs and deadlines
