What does a Art Director do?
An Art Director sets and executes the visual language for creative projects, working across advertising campaigns, brand identity, editorial, and digital content. Day-to-day they concept ideas with copywriters and creative directors, brief and direct photographers, illustrators, and designers, review layouts and assets for visual consistency, and present creative work to stakeholders or clients. Depending on the specialisation, campaigns, fashion and beauty, medical communications, or internal branding, they balance aesthetic judgment with strategic intent, ensuring every visual output aligns with the brand or campaign brief.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and pitch visual concepts for campaigns, brands, or editorial projects
- Direct photo and video shoots, including briefing photographers and overseeing on-set styling and composition
- Guide and review work from designers, illustrators, and retouchers to maintain visual consistency
- Collaborate with copywriters and creative directors to develop integrated creative concepts
- Manage multiple projects and deliverables across print, digital, and social channels
- Present creative concepts and rationale to clients or internal stakeholders
Skills & tools
Education & background
Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, fine art, or a related field; portfolio of work typically carries more weight than formal qualifications
